Take Aways
This film was was shot over a weekend on a trip to upstate New York. The tone of this film was very particular and from the start Elaine Rava emphasize that she wanted it to look “a little off”. She came with paintings and photography as references.
Sets and Set Dressing
The primary setting was a house that was found on Airbnb. We brought clutter, dust, and a smoke machine to characterize the mother’s end of life as cluttered, dark, and dirty. We added touches referencing Kay’s (the main character) childhood.
We also shot a funeral scene in a local church. I created an ern by painting a dollar store vase.
Prop Technology
The character interacts with both a phone and computer. We wanted these items to feel strange and out of time. We used a japanese flip phone and rigged up a CRT monitor to work with my laptop.
